Abstract

AIM: To investigate the effect of a 1 g/L cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) gargle on the amount of plaque and the severity of gingivitis and periodontitis. METHODS: Subjects were assessed at the beginning and end of a four-week period during which they gargled with 10 mL of CPC for 60 s twice daily in addition to their usual oral hygiene procedures. Subjects were observed in plaque index and so on before and after investigation. RESULTS: The use of a 1 g/L CPC gargle was associated with a significant reduction in both indices and clinical results of gingivitis and periodontitis. CONCLUSION: Use of a 1 g/L CPC gargle twice daily reduces both the amount of plaque and severity of gingivitis and periodontitis in subjects in addition to their normal oral hygiene procedures.
