Abstract
Objective:To investigate the renal protective effect of Puerarin in type 2 diabetic rats. Methods:Type 2 diabetes was induced in rats by high-sucrose and high-fat diet and a low dose of streptozocin. Rats were randomly divided into following groups: normal control rats, diabetic rats, diabetic rats treated with valsartan and diabetic rats treated with Puerarin. Plasma glucose, serum lipids, creatinine, BUN, urinary albumin excretion and PAI-1 bioactivity in plasma were measured. Light and electron microscope were used to study the pathological changes of the kidney.Results:Urinary albumin excretion and bioactivity of PAI-1 were significantly lower in diabetic rats of Puerarin treated group and Valsartan treated group than those in untreated diabetic rats. Renal function and pathologic changes in diabetic rats of Puerarin-treated group and Valsartan- treated group were significantly improved.Conclusion:Puerarin may have some renal protective effect on diabetic rats.
