Correlation Between the Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor(VEGF) and Prognosis of Non Small Cell Lung Carcinoma

Abstract

Objective To study the expression of VEGF in non small lung cacinoma(NSCLC)and its correlation to prognosis.Methods In 58 NSCLC,VEGF was examined immunohistochemically and patients prognosis was evaluated by retropspective analysis combined with follow up data.Results The positive rate of VEGF in NSCLC was significantly higher than that in normal lung tissues adjacent to carcinoma(75 86% versus 20 00%), P 0 01,and was related with histological grade,clinical stage and lymph node metastases.The 1-,3-,5-year survival rates of patients with negative VEGF expression were 92 8%,85 7% and 71 4%,respectively;those of NSCLC with weakly positive VEGF expression were 87 5%,62 5% and 41 6%,respectively.In contrast,those of patients with strongly positive VEGF expression were 85 0%,35 0% and 15 0%,respectively.The survival rates among the three groups of NSCLC were statistically different.Multiple factor rate survival analysis by COX regression model showed that VEGF expression level was a risky prognostic factor for NSCLC.Conclusion The expression level of VEGF is an indepenent prognostic factor in NSCLC.
