Abstract

The thin-walled cold-formed steel, which is a kind of light-weight material, has superior structural performance and durability. For thin-walled cold-formed steel members subjected to compression or bending, there are three buckling modes—local plate buckling, section distortional buckling and overall buckling.Studied in the paper are the two calculating methods of stability of thin-walled cold-formed steel members— the effective width method and the direct strength method.Through an example,a comparison between the two methods is made and the application condition of each method is explained.
