Abstract

To evaluate the effect and toxicity of high dose three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy(HDTCR) for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. From Mar 2001 to Oct 2003, 38 cases with non-small-cell lung cancer were treated by high dose three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy. All of these patients were retrospectively analysed. The short-term response and 1-, 2-year survival rate, median survival and toxicity in HDTCR group were compared with those in 34 cases with non-small-cell lung cancer received conventional radiation therapy in the same period (control group). There was no significant difference for response rate between the two groups. With a median follow up of 16 months (range from 6~32 months), the 1-, 2-year survival rates and median survival in HDTCR group were 79.08%, 49.60%, 22 months and 63.44%, 25.10%, 16 months in control group respectively(P=0.04). The difference of hematologic toxicity and acute radiation pneumonitis, esophagitis between the two groups has no statistical significance. [Conclusion] High dose three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy can improve the survival rate in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer. The acute toxicity was similar to those patients received conventional radiation therapy.
