Abstract
Objective To investigate the efficacy and safety of microvascular decompression (MVD)for hemifacial spasm(HFS). Method A retrospective study on 352 patients with HFS who had been surgically treated by MVD was conducted to analyze the efficacy of surgery and complications related to the procedure. Results The symptoms were disappeared immediately in 276 of the 352 patients after MVD and remitted in 52. One patient needed to repeat the procedure due to failure of the first surgery. Conclusions MVD is the most effective treatment for HFS and is less invasive. Better understanding of local anatomy and microsurgical skills are the important factors for the successful procedure.
