Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic effects of Germinated Barley Foodstuff(GBF) in a chemically-induced rat model of experimental colitis.Be Tested intestinal contents for clostridium butyricum and serum for concentration of butyric acid to study the potential mechanism of GBF in maintaining the balance of gut microflora and in preventing the mucosal damage. Methods: An experimental Ulcerative Colitis model was established by acetic acid of 40 SD rats randomly divided into four groups: normal group, model group, salazosulfamide group and GBF group. After two weeks intervention,Bacterial cultivation and Gas Chromatography method were used to examine the clostridium butyricum in intestinal and butyric acid in serum. Results: The total number of clostridium butyricum in gut and concentration of butyric acid in serum were significantly lower in rats of model group than that in rats of GBF group and salazosulfamide group(P0.05).Conclusion: GBF can elevate the clostridium butyricum levels in gut lumen, maintain the balance of intestinal microflora, exerts some therapeutic effects on the inflamed and intact mucosa.
