Understanding and Misunderstanding of the Short Lyrics of Wen Tingyun——reading On the Short Lyrics of Wen Tingyun by Ye Jiaying

The reason why the short lyrics of Wen Tingyun concided with the tradition of metaphorical expressions lies in his personality of holding on to progressive thoughts and the virtue of faithfulness without yielding to pressure or swerving because of temptations.However,in history he had been once falsely accused to be weak in action,lacking restraint, which,in truth,was due to his not being cooperative with the then main stream social corrupting force of his own age.It was for this reason that throughout Wen Tingyun's life,he was under depression and blows.In melancholy,he accumulated in himself bosom of righteousness without an opportunity of being understood.Although he wrote love poems in flowery style,he created an impression in style of lonely coldness and embodied in his poetry a quality of transparency and purity. From the viewpoint of making comments according to knowledge of the person, the fact that his short lyrics were written in metaphors is necessity rather than coincidence.
