Abstract

Objective To detect the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in human renal cell carcinomas, and study its relationship to cellular proliferation. Methods Immunohistochemistry was performed by using avidin-biotin peroxidase complex procedure. Results The positive rate of COX-2 expression in renal cell carcinoma was 23/45.But there was no or weak expression in noncancerous tissues of kideny.Overexpression of COX-2 in renal cell carcinomas was related to its pathologic grading, clinical staging and history types ~(P ~0.005). Although expression of Ki-67 was found in all RCC,there was a faint stain in normal renal tissue. The expression of Ki-67 was closely related to the pathologic grading, clinical staging and history types ~(P ~0.005). There was a correlation between COX-2 and Ki-67.Conclusion The overexpression of COX-2 in renal cell carcinoma may play a crucial role in its pathologic grading, clinical staging, history types and cell proliferation in renal cell carcinoma.
