Abstract
Two forage spring maize cultivars were used to research the effects of planting density on the growth of spring maize and its forage yield in this study. The results showed that with the increase of planting density, the height of spring maize plants increased, while the numbers of green leaves and secondary roots per plant decreased. The leaf area index(LAI) of spring maize increased with the increase of planting density, but in the conditions of much higher density,LAI decreased more quickly in the late growth stage. With the increase of planting density, population fresh weight of spring maize enhanced, but the yield-increasing effect of planting density on spring maize declined.Spring maize population dry weight improved with the increase of planting density in a reasonable range, but as density reached 75 000 plants/hm2,population dry weight declined. In the conditions of this study, with the increase of planting density, spring maize bare plant rates increased, and kernels per spike and 1 000-grain weight declined.Grain yield of spring maize improved with the increase of planting density in a reasonable range, but decreased in a much higher density conditions.
