Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the association between oral hygiene habits and the prevalence of periodontal disease of occupation in Shanghai. Methods:The questionnaire about oral hygiene habits was made in 400 subjects taken from different occupation groups in Shanghai by stratified and cluster random sampling.Adults' periodontal health status was evaluated by oral hygiene index-simplified,gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth, clinical attachment loss, tooth mobility and residual teeth. Results:Oral hygiene habits, oral hygiene status and periodontal health status were extremely signigicant different(P0.01)between different occupation adults in Shanghai. The population oral hygiene index-simplified of adults at their post in Shanghai was 2.16±0.99.The population gingival index of adults at their post in Shanghai was 1.23±0.50,that indicated moderate inflammation. The prevelence of periodontitis was 71.5%.Conclusion:Oral hygiene habits and oral hygiene status of Shanghai adult population at their post are significantly associated with occupations. The periodontal health status of Shanghai adults at their post is also significantly correlate with occupations. The survey confirms that oral hygiene habits may play an important role in influencing oral hygiene status and the prevalence of periodontal disease.
