Development of Chinese Sex Role Scale and Relations Between Sex Role and Psychosocial Adjustment

This research was aimed at constructing Sex Role Scale for Chinese subjects and exploring the relationship be- tween sex role and psychosocial adjustment.Two studies were fulfilled to sex role scale construction and to test the hy- pothesis that feminine subjects adjusted better than androgynous in Chinese.Study I distinguished items with different ratings between males and females with total of more than 5000 subjects from the Chinese Personality Scale(QZPS),and Masculine and Feminine subscales were then established with each of 30 items consisting of seven(for masculine)and six (for feminine)factors,respectively.StudyⅡexplored the relations between sex stereotypes and psychosocial adjustment indicated by SCL 90,behavior inhibition,and self-experience inconsistency.It was proposed that Chinese culture is a kind of feminine culture and more importantly,anti-masculine culture.Theoretical implications of the current studies and di- rections of future research are also discussed in this article.
