Abstract

Grammar metaphor is an important concept in functional grammar. Halliday insists that nominalization is an important source of grammar metaphors. Significance of nominalization lies in the fact that it reorganizes small sentences and the information structure of discourse through the changes of participants and environment constituents and the changes of the small sentence level and phrase structure. In the formal style, nominalization structure is an important feature, because nominalization holds the function of enrichment and concentration and can make the expression of meaning in the discourse in line with the writing requirement of the formal style characterized by objectivity, logicality, rationality, simplicity, etc.
