Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the value of transvaginal ultrasonographic examination of uterine cervix in predicting preterm delivery among the women with threatened preterm Labor.Methods:53 cases with threatened preterm labor were chosen as the research subjects. The cervical length, internal os wedge width and forebag length were measured by transvaginal ultrasonography. The cervical Bishop score was also determined.Results:15 preterm delrveries occurred among the 53 pregnancy women with threatened preterm labor. The cerviacl length by sonography of 15 preterm deliveries(20.8±6.2)mm was significantly shorter than the women without preterm deliveries(33.7±5.5)mm(P0.05).Forebag length was longer in preterm deliveries(10.3±4.4)mm than in threatened preterm labor(7.5±2.5)mm,(P0.05).Bishop score was higher in preterm labor(7.6±3.7).There is no difference in internal cervical os wedge width between the two groups.A cervical length of 30mm as the cutoff to predict the preterm delivery among the women with threatened preterm labor has a 100% of sensitivity,84% of specificity,71% of positive predictive value and a 100% of negative predictive value. Conclusion:It is suggested that the transvaginal ultrasonsgraphic examination of the uterine cervix is an effective method for the prediction of the outcome of the patients with preterm labor.
