Significance and expression of PTEN in breast cancer

Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of PTEN in breast cancer and its clinical significance.Methods Immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of PTEN in 83 cases of breast cancer.Results The positive percentage of PTEN expression was 61.4%(51/83)in patients with breast cancer,negative percentage was 38.6%(32/83).The expression of PTEN was closely related to tumor size(P 0.05),clinical stage(P0.05)and expression of ER(P0.05)of breast cancer.The overall 5 year survival rate of patients with PTEN high expression was superior to those with low expression(P0.05).Conclusion This study suggests that tumor suppressor gene PTEN is abnormally expressed in breast cancer.PTEN probably plays an important role in tumorigenesis and development of breast cancer.PTEN may be used as a marker for prediction of the prognosis of patients with breast cancer.
