Comparative analysis of tooth wear between human samples from 3000 years ago and modern adults

Abstract

AIM: To investigate the tooth wear state of permanent tooth from human samples about 3000 years ago,compare it with the state of modern people and research the evolutional rule and influential factors of human tooth wear from 3000 years ago to nowadays.METHODS:The Smith and Knight tooth wear index(TWI) was applied to assess the degree of the incisal and occlusal surface wear of total 1255 teeth from 99 samples(unearthed at the Chang'an disttrict of Shan'xi province)about 3000 years ago by differernt age groups,then statististically compared them with the average tooth wear of 416 modern persons.RESULTS:In each different age groups,the average attrition gradation of each tooth from 3000 year ago was higher than the gradation of 416 modern adults.The variance was significant(P0.05).In comparion with modern people,the anterior teeth samples from 3000 years ago were worn to a greater degree of attrition than the posterior teeth.CONCLUSION:With the development of human civilization,the degree of tooth wear decreases,but compared with posterior teeth,the anterior teeth decreases more apparently.
