Abstract

It is nearly a century since national opera began life in China. The Chinese national opera has been growing along two dimensions: one is the creation of opera on a national basis-using national music in the opera; the other is the composition of opera by referring to western opera. The progression of opera creation in China saw an obvious imbalance between the two dimensions. The former was very popular before 1980s,whereas after 1980s the latter has been developing quickly and gradually took over as the main trend of opera creation. This article is an attempt to inquire into the causes underlying the imbalanced progression.
