A Review on Searle's Theory of Proper Names and Intentionality

Abstract

In history,linguists and philosophers have made a lot of research on proper names,as the understanding of proper names is of much significance for the understanding of many other language phenomena.Based on the introduction of the Descriptivist Theory and the Casual Theory on proper names,the paper examines and reviews John R.Searle's theory of proper names and intentionality.The paper puts forward that Searle's viewpoint intentionality determining the reference of proper names enlarges the scope for the research on proper names and promotes the understanding of the meanings of proper names.
