The expression of bFGF and VEGF in rats following brain injury

Abstract

Objective To study the expression and interrelationship of bFGF and VEGF at different time in a rat model of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and to investigate the pathogenic mechanism of brain injury at molecular level. Methods Diffuse axonal injury with local contusion was produced in Wistar rats by the method described by Marmarou with some modifications. The expressions of bFGF and VEGF of brain around contusion area were observed by immunohistochemical methods. Results The expression of bFGF mRNA began to increase 1 h postinjury, and reached the maximum level in 12 h in marginal area of injury focus. The expression of VEGF mRNA increased following brain injury and peaked in 24 h postinjury in marginal area of injury focus. Conclusion The results showed a close relationship between bFGF?VEGF gene expression and the degree of brain injury. As growth factors, bFGF and VEGF might play a role in neuronal protection and repair following traumatic brain injury .
