Abstract

Apart from their regular missionaryt work,the Protestant missionaries in China in early modern times also gave some attention and commentary to new Chinese culture.Taking several articles in The Chinese Recorder as an example which was a famous English journal sponsored by American Protestant missionaries in China in the nineteenth century,the paper points out that new Chinese literature as an impoprtant part of modern Chinese culture also aroused the interest of these missionaries.Through their commentary and popularity of new Chinese literature and their preaching of Christianity,these missionaries in fact exerted thier influence on the ideas and spiritual life of modern Chinese.
