Abstract
Shen Congwen deliberately established a mysterious “water”image which was a golden key to opening the writer's hidden heart and understanding the works. His fascination with water came from the particular culture and psychology. Water has archetypical meaning in Chinese culture. Shen Congwen borrowed orthodox resources of “water”image to establish his artistic world and express his aesthetic idea from three aspects, which were water and gloom, water and life, water and nature. When he unearthed and used the orthodox resources of “water”image, Shen Congwen extended its implication and made it have profusely lyric style and utopian emotion. It revealed his extraordinary ability of literary creation.
