Abstract

AIM To investigate the relationship between M235T polymorphism in angiotensinogen(AGT) gene and essential hypertension(EH) in Kazakhs in Xingjiang.METHODS A case-control study was performed in 278 hypertensive and~()220 normaltensive(NT) Kazakh subjects, who were randomly selected from Barkol pasture.A previous medical history of diabetes and hypertension, and body mass index(BMI) were recorded.Fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride and cholesterol were measured. The variants M235T of AGT gene were determined using a mutagenically separated polymerase chain reaction(MS-PCR) technique.RESULTS The distributions of M235T genotypes were MT(32.7%),TT(62.6%) and MM(4.7%) in hypertensive subjects and MT(38.2%),TT(51.8%) and MM(10.0%) in normotensive subjects. The frequency of T allele was 79.0% in hypertensive subjects and 70.9% in normotensive subjects. There were significant differences in both genotype distribution and allele frequencies between hypertensive and normotensive subjects.Odds ratios for EH of T allele was 2.3 times of non-T alleles,(OR TT+MT vs MM,2.3;95% CI 1.1-4.6;P0.05).Further analyses found no significant correlation between M235T genotypes and age,BMI,Glu,triglyceride, cholesterol, systolic blood pressure(BP) and diastolic BP.CONCLUSION The T235 allele of the AGT gene may be related to the risk for EH in Kazakh population in Xinjiang.
