Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy(MRS) in the thalamus and corpus striatum in patients with Parkinsons disease(PD). And to evaluate the effects of the technique in the pathophysiologic process and the diagnose of PD. Methods The content of NAA, Cho and Cr in thalamus and corpus striatum in twenty two patients and twelve age matched healthy controls were examined with proton MRS. The ratios of NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr and NAA/Cho were calculatd. Results The ratio of NAA/Cr in the thalamus in PD patients showed significant reduction compared to the controls. However, no significant differences were found in other ratios of these two areas. Conclusions The reduction of NAA/Cr ratio in thalamus in PD patients may indicate the dysfunction of the neurons. Proton MRS may be used as a noninvasive way to diagnose PD and to understand the pathophysiologic process of the disease.
