Abstract
BACKGROUND To observe the effects of enteral nutrition (EN) and parenteral nutrition (PN) in aged patients with severe respiratory failure.CASE REPORTS60 aged patients with severe respiratory failure were divided into groups of EN and PN,30 cases in each group, and it was compared between two groups under the condition of intaking equal amount of calorie and nitrogen. The albumin and nitrogen balance in group of EN was superior to group of PN,and the time of mechanical ventilation and treatment cost were lower in group of EN than in group of PN. There was no statistical difference in the complication rate between two groups.DISCUSSIONThe EN can be more preferable satisfying the needs of aged patients with respiratory failure in mechanical ventilation, and reduces the mechanical ventilation time and treatment cost.
