Abstract

Being the foundation of the GIS system, the model of the spatial database determinates how the spatial entities are abstracted, stored and managed in the computer systems. The traditional spatial database stored the spatial data and non-spatial attribute data in relational databases and file systems respectively. Because of the widely use of the object-oriented policy and the more complicated developing of GIS system, this traditional architecture caused more and more problems, such as deficiency in description of the real world, complexity in implementation and inconvenience in the sharing of the spatial information. To overcome these problems, consulting the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for SQL and the data structure of Oracle Spatial, this paper discusses the object-relational data model, which is based on the relational database and object-oriented policy.
