Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between left ventricular hypertrophy and pulse pressure and course in essential hypertension.Methods Seventy-one patients with essential hypertension were observed in pulse pressure,course,and left ventricular mass index with echocardiography.Results Thirty-five hypertensive patients (49.3%) had hypertrophy of left ventricle.The multivariate analysis showed pulse pressure and course as independent predictors of left ventricular hypertrophy (odds ratio,1.3,95% confidence interval,1.1 to 1.5,P=0.009,and 2.1,95% confidence interval,1.1 to 4.2,P=0.028,respectively).Conclusion It is suggested that patients with prolonged hypertension and those hypertensive patients with high pulse pressure are at risk for left ventricular hypertrophy.
