Abstract

Isobutyl p-hydroxybenzoate was synthesized from p-hydroxybenzoic acid and isobutyl alcohol by using gallium sulfate as the catalyst. The effects of amount of the catalyst, reaction time, molar ratio of alcohol to acid and different carrying water agents on recovery rate of product were investigated.Experimental results showed that the catalyst had high catalytic activity in the reaction, and was insoluble in reaction system and easy to post treatment process. It was the efficient, economic and environmental friendly catalyst. The best conditions were p-hydroxybenzoic acid 0.05 mol, molar ratio of alcohol to acid 6,the catalyst 2.0 g,toluene 10 mL and reaction time 8 h.The yield could reach 96.6%.
