Abstract

Objective To study the expression of survivin gene and its relationship to apoptosis in renal cell cancer (RCC).Methods Expression of survivin gene and apoptosis were assessed by immunohistochemistry staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling methods, respectively. Results In 41 cases of renal cell cancer, positive rate for survivin was 56.1%,it was significantly higher than normal control group(0%)(P 0.01). There was no relationship between survivin and histologic subtype (P 0.05). However, survivin had relationship with the development of pathological stage and grade of RCC(P 0.05). There was an inverse correlation between survivin labeling index and apoptosis index(n=12,r=-0.58)(P 0.01). Conclusions survivin had relationship with biological behavior of RCC. Survivin is negatively correlated with apoptosis. Survivin could play a critical role in the development of RCC.
