Abstract
Objective To investigate the morphology of root canal and location of apical foramen of maxillary first premolar. Methods One hundred maxillary first premolars were transversely sliced at cervix, the location of root canal orifice and the apical foramen were observed, and the distance between apical foramen and root apex was measured, Then the morphology were studied on transparent specimen. Results 57.8% of apical foramens were located at apices. The average distance between the apical foramen and root apex was 0.62mm. Single root and single canal accounted for 8%, double root and double canal accounted for 56%, single-double compound canal occurred 36%, respectively. Conclusion The morphology of root canal of maxillary first premolar is very complex and a high proportion of apical foramen is not located at root apex.
