On the Shift of the "Literature" Concept at the Turn between Qing Dynasty and ROC Age,and the Writing of Chinese Literature History——With Example of Two Books of Chinese Literature History

Abstract

In traditional Chinese context,literature means articles and various learning.Later the term becomes to mean a branch of academic studies which focuses on language-based arts.At the turn from Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China(ROC) age,the western historic outlook of pure was transported into China and became the theoretical basis for constructing Chinese literature history.A survey of the two works of Chinese Literature History,written by Lin Chuangjia and by Huang Ren respectively,offers more concrete understandings of the shift of concept at that time.Lin's non-chronicle work is lectures based on traditional concept;while Huang's is a monograph based on the western concept,which is the origin of Chinese literature history in modern sense.
