Abstract

The characteristics of second language acquisition (SLA) refer to this kind of acquisition which is different from the acquisition of this language as a native one. To get a better understanding of the characteristics of SLA will help to arouse learners' interests and to bring into full play their autonomous learning. Based on a revision of the theories on first language acquisition (FLA), this paper attempts to compare FLA with SLA as follows: motivation, environment and methods, age and the route of acquisition (pronunciation, vocabulary and structure). There are some similarities and differences between the two kinds of acquisition. Similarities reflect the universal rule of language acquisition, and differences are the aspect to which we should pay attention in the teaching of second language.
