Application of low intensity pulsed ultrasound in mandibular fracture healing

Abstract

Objective:To clinically evaluate if low intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) can improve the bone healing of mandibular fractures. Method:40 patients with mandibular fractures were equally divided into LIPUS group and control group. Patients in LIPUS group on postoperative day 3 received daily ultrasound treatment,20 min/day,for 4 weeks. Patients in the control group received sham application. The clinical bone healing time of each case were recorded respectively,and X-ray films were taken to quantitatively evaluate the fracture healing at 2,4,6 week after operation. The data were statistically analyzed. Result:The clinical bone healing time of LIPUS group was significantly shorter than that of the control group. The quantitative examinations of the fracture healing by the X-ray films showed that the bone healing of LIPUS group was evidently better than that of the control group during 4~6 week. Conclusion:Results of this study suggest that LIPU improves the bone healing of mandibular fractures clinically.
