Abstract
AIM: To observe the therapeutic effect of combined penicillamine and methotrexate in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: The treatment group of 70 patients (M 13, F 57, age 47±s 12 a and disease course being 3±4 a) on the basis of non_steroidal anti_inflammatory drugs were treated jointly with both penicillamine 125 mg, po, qd and methotrexate 7.5 mg, po, qw. The control group of 55 patients (M 17, F 38, age 51±12 a, disease course being 6±5 a) were treated with non_steroidal anti_inflammatory drugs only. All medication courses were 3 mo. RESULTS: In the treatment and control groups, the effective rates were 94% and 76%, respectively, P0.01. The rates of adverse reactions in both groups were 17% and 13%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Combined treatment with penicillamine and methotrexate has good therapeutic efficacy.
