Comparative study on the effects of cyclopentolate hydrochloride,compound tropicamide and atropine on pupil and diopter of children and teenagers

Abstract

Objective:To compare the effects of three cycloplegics on the pupil size and diopter of children and teenagers. Methods:223 patients with ametropia were randomly divided into two groups.Each group was divided into four subgroups.The patients in the two groups were treated with 0.5% compound tropicamide eyedrops and 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride eyedrops for opening pupil,respectively,after recovery of pupil,all of them were treated with atropine for three days,the diameter of pupil was measured by a ruler after treated with different drugs,and automatic refractor was used for optometry objectively. Results:Except the patients more than 12 years in myopia group,there was significant difference in the effects of three drugs on the size of pupil among different age groups(P0.05).In all age groups,the cycloplegic effect of atropine was stronger than those of the other two cycloplegics(P0.05).Except the patients under 12 years in myopia group(P0.05),there was no significant difference in cycloplegic effect between cyclopentolate hydrochloride and compound tropicamide. Conclusion:In terms of mydriatics effect,0.5% compound tropicamide eyedrops1% atropine gel1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride eyedrops;in terms of cycloplegia,atropine is superior to compound tropicamide and cyclopentolate hydrochloride,while the cycloplegic effects of the latter two are similar.For the patients who have used atropine for optometry and wear glasses continuously,compound tropicamide and cyclopentolate hydrochloride are considered for optometry during subsequent visit.
