Abstract

Objective To investigate the efficacy of combined scalp and body acupuncture in treating post-stroke upper limb spasticity.Method Seventy-six patients with post-stroke upper limb spasticity were randomly allocated to a treatment group of 38 cases and a control group of 38 cases.The control group received routine medication and rehabilitation therapy in addition to acupuncture at points selected in the book Acupuncture-Moxibustion Science.The treatment group received combined scalp and body acupuncture in addition to in addition to treatment.Six days constituted one course of treatment.All the patients received four courses of treatment.Upper limb spasticity was scored using the Ashworth Scale in the patients before and after treatment.Improvements in upper limb spasticity were observed in the two groups of patients.Result The Ashworth Scale score was better in the treatment group than in the control group;there was a statistically significant difference(P0.05).Conclusion Combined scalp and body acupuncture has a certain advantage over conventional body acupuncture in treating post-stroke upper limb spasticity.
