Abstract

Objective To evaluate efficacy and safety of duloxetine and paroxetine for patients with depression. Methods A total of 58 patients with depression were randomized into duloxetine group with 28 patients and paroxetine group with 30 patients for 6-week treatment. They were assessed with the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 items(HAMD-17) for clinical efficacy and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) for side effects at the baseline,1st weekend,2nd weekend,4th weekend and 6th weekend. Results Compared with the baseline, the scores of HAMD-17 in two groups significantly decreased at the 1st weekend and lasting to the 6th weekend(P0.05).At the 6th weekend, the effective rates in duloxetine group and paroxetine group were 73.3% and 78.8% respectively(P0.05),the clinical cure rates were 53.3% and 57.6% respectively(P0.05).Score of HAMD in duloxetine group was significantly lower than that in paroxetine group at the 1st weekend(P0.05).The most common adverse effects in duloxetine group were insomnia, dizziness, nausea, and hyperhidrosis. Conclusion Duloxetine is as effective as paroxetine for treatment of depression, and takes effect rapidly with high safety and slight adverse effects.
