Effect of Breviscapine on peripheral neuropathy in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Objective To study the effect of Breviscapine on peripheral neuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus rats.Methods The rat models of type 2 diabetes mellitus were induced by feeding high-sugar and high-fat diet,with low-dose streptozotocin(STZ)intraperitoneal injection(30 mg/kg),Then the model rats were divided into two groups:diabetes mellitus group,treatment group(the rats were fed with Breviscapine 10 mg·kg-1·d-1).After 1,3 month of administration,the plasma glucose,plasma fat,electrophysioloyic changes and the pathological development of sutal nerve were observed.Results In treatment group,plasma glucose and plasma fat were significantly lower than those of diabetes mellitus group,however,the motor conduction velocity of sciatic nerve was significantly increased,as compared with that of diabetes mellitus group(P0.05 or P0.01).The pathological changes in treatment group was lighter than those of diabetes mellitus group(P0.05 or P0.01).Conclusion Breviscapine has certain preventive and therapeutic effect on peripheral neuropathy in rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
