Abstract

In order to improve the safety of road lighting and realize energy saving of road lighting, the luminous efficiencies of high pressure sodium lamp and metal halide lamp under citopic and mesopic lighting level was studied respectively based on the theory of citopic and mesopic vision. The reaction time experiments of high pressure sodium lamp and metal halide lamp were performed. The luminance contrast coefficients of metal halide lamp to high pressure sodium lamp are thus obtained. The results suggest that luminous efficiency of metal halide lamp under citopic is triple of that of high pressure sodium lamp. The luminous efficiency of high pressure sodium lamp is higher than that of metal halide lamp when high brightness. As low brightness, luminous efficiency of metal halide lamp is higher than that of high pressure sodium lamp. The lighting effect of metal halide lamp is better than that of high pressure sodium lamp under road lighting if we consider only reaction time.
