Clinical Efficacy and Change of Fear Level during Subgingival Scaling with Vector~(TM)-system or P5 System

Abstract

Objective To compare the clinical efficacy and the change of fear level during subgingival scaling,using VectorTM-system or P5 ultrasonic system.Methods Thirty-five patients suffered from mild to moderate periodontitis were randomly divided into two groups.After OHI(oral hygiene instruction)and supragingival scaling,they were treated by subgingival scaling using VectorTM-system or P5 system,respectively.DFS was evaluated right after the treatment.PLI(plaque index)and BOP(bleeding on probing)were recorded and PD(probing depth)was measured at baseline,one month after treatment.Results At one month evaluation,both groups showed improvement in clinical parameters.No statistically significant differences in PD and BOP could be observed between patients treated by VectorTM-system and P5 system,while PLI had greater improvement in patients treated by VectorTM-system.In VectorTM-system group,DFS score decreased from 51.28±19.61 to 49.16±17.21,which was not statistically different(P0.05).While in P5 group,the DFS score increased from 49.41±16.14 to 50.82±15.86,which had a statistical difference(P0.05).The changes of the two groups in the DFS scores were statistically significant(P0.05).Conclusion During initial periodontal treatment for the patients with mild to moderate periodontitis,VectorTM-system could achieve a comparable clinical efficacy as P5 system and will not strengthen the fear level of the patients during subgingival scaling thus to stabilizing the patients' psychological status.
