A Cognitive Context Approach to Pragmatic Presupposition:A Discourse Analysis on Humour

Abstract

As a componential part of communicative context,dynamic pragmatic presupposition will influence cognitive context,making it continuously develop.Successful communication is achieved by both participants' cognitive efforts in seeking relevance between old and new information in the fluid cognitive context and making correct inferences.The interpretation of humorous discourses depends on presuppositional inferences made in the cognitive context and the establishment of optimal relevance.
