Abstract

As an independent academic field,applied linguistics has made great achievements in the last fifty years,when new theories were proposed and introduced in language research and education.Cognitive theory has been the leading theory in both research and practice in applied linguistics.Recently,sociocultural theory has been introduced into language learning and language teaching.The application of the two theories to applied linguistics indicates the tendency towards the future development in applied linguistics.
