THE "阿"([e]) IN YIYANG DIALECT

Abstract

阿 is very frequently used in Yiyang dialect. Compared to classifiers in other southern dialects that are similar to article, its usage frequency, function and meaning are very different and it is similar to English, but the emergence of 阿 is not compulsory. Based on depiction of the distribution and the function, and comparison between dialects, the conclusion is that 阿 is the result of functional expansion and grammaticalization and phonetic omission.
