Abstract

Objective Applying color Doppler sonography to evaluate the relationship between noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus and cerebral infarction. Methods 64 patients without diabetes and 58 patients with NIDDM were examined retrospectively by color Doppler sonography, Investigate the carotid artery intima media thickness, atherosclerotic plaque, plaque morphology and composition. Result Fifty-six cases with NIDDM had carotid atherosclerotic plaque, 43 cases were unstable plaque, 48 cases without diabetes had carotid atherosclerotic plaque, 23 cases were unstable plaque( P0.01).Thirty-three cases with NIDDM had bilateral carotid plaque , IMT were 2.43±0.75 mm, 21 cases without diabetes had bilateral carotid plaque , IMT were 2.12±0.67mm( P0.05 ). Conclusion Diabetes aggrevate the disorder of carotid artery atherosclerosis, the most carotid plaques with NIDDM are unstable plaque , it is very good to use color Doppler sonography to investigate the carotid artery plaque morphology and composition.
