In their respective works,both Shen Congwen and Lawrence reveal their concern over the progress of human civilization.Lawrence explores a way out for the society of Western civilization by describing the alienation of relationship by industrial civilization in the cultural backgroud of English industrial society.Shen Congwen,however, directly or indirectly expresses critical attitude to urban civilization in the cobweb of history and reality and in semifeudal and preindustral times,aiming to inject vitality into the old and senile nation with the overflowing vigor of the country people to realize rebirth of the nation.
