Abstract
Abstrcat As viewed from the mobility support of data terminals in the network layer, the similarities of IPv4 and IPv6 and the differences between current IPv4 and the next generation IPv6 on mobility support are introduced. Based on that, the handover procedure is discussed, which is the fundamental of Mobile IP implementation. The principles of the proposed handover techniques are presented, including low-latency handover for IPv4, fast handover and smooth handover for IPv6, and hierarchy handover for HMIPv6. Effective methods of improving handover performance as grouping buffer memory, multicast and L2-trigger handover are presented. Path binding/register and address book informing schemes are (proposed) and the developing direction is indicated.
