Analysis on nursing adverse events in 84 cases

Objective To probe into the causes and management strategies of nursing adverse events in order to ensure the nursing safety. Methods 84 cases of non-punitive and voluntarily reported nursing adverse events from January to December 2013 were retrospectively analyzed by nursing system in a class-A three-level general hospital.The causes,sorts,and classifications of nursing adverse events were comprehensively analyzed. Results The first 5 nursing adverse events were tube falling,transfusion related,falling down/ bed dropping,medication error,and methodological/technical error.The main causes of nursing adverse events occurring were ill communication between nurse and patient,insufficient evaluation,slack verification,and inappropriate management.Most nursing adverse events occurred in junior nurses who worked less than 3 years. Conclusion Strengthening training on junior nurses in nursing department,adopting mobile nursing information system,trying out disease/health manager dedicated management,promoting all-round health education,and intensifying the communications in patients and their families can effectively reduce the occurrence of nursing adverse events.
