Abstract

The colour reaction of a new reagent 2-(tetrazolylazo)-5-diethylamino benzoic acid (TTZDBA) with Co 2+ is studied. The new reagent reacts with Co 2+ to form a stable red complex (2∶1 by mole) in the medium of HAc-NaAc at pH 3.5. The maximum absorption wavelength and apparent molar absorptivity are 620 nm and 9.11×10 4 L/(mol·cm) repectively. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0~0.5 mg Co/L. The formed complex is stable in strong mineral acids solutions, whereas complexes of other coexisting ions with TTZDBA will decompose. Thus, the selectivity is improved. The method has been applied to direct determination of cobalt in Vitamin B_ 12 and waste water with satisfactory results.
