Clinical Study of Bushen Huoxue Granule in Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Bushen Huoxue Granule(BSHXG),a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for reinforcing kidney and activating blood circulation,in treatment of Parkinson’s disease(PD).Methods A randomized,single-blind,placebo-controlled clinical study was undertaken.Eighty-eight PD patients were randomly divided into BSHXG group and control group.The control group of 43 cases was treated with western medicine and placebo,while the BSHXG group of 45 cases was treated with BSHXG and placebo.All patients were treated for 3 months.Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS) and Scale of TCM Syndrome for PD of all objects were measured before and after treatment.Results After three months treatment,the score of UPDRS in BSHXG group was 51.2±5.7,compared with before treatment(55.3±6.8),it was significantly improved(P 0.05),while compared with the control group(49.6±6.8),the difference was not significant(P 0.05).The progress rate in BSHXG group was 77.8%,compared with that in control group(81.4%),the difference was not significant(P 0.05).The score of Scale of TCM Syndrome for PD in BSHXG group was 19.2±3.2,compared with before treatment(23.5±3.6),it was significantly improved(P 0.05),and compared with that in control group(21.4±4.5),it was significantly lowered(P 0.05).BSHXG group showed a higher efficacy(88.9%) than the control group(39.5%) in improving TCM symptoms(P 0.05).Conclusions BSHXG is effective and safe in treating PD patients.BSHXG can markedly improve TCM symptoms of Parkinson’s patients.
