Clinical efficacy and safety of piperacillin/tazobactam in empirical treatment of bacterial respiratory tract infections in children

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of piperacillin/ tazobactam in the empirical treatment of bacterial respiratory tract infections in children.METHODS The distribution of the pathogens causing respiratory tract infections in the children were retrospectively analyzed,the clinical efficacy and adverse reactions of piperacillin/tazobactam were observed and then compared with those who treated with cefotaxime and cefoperazone.RESULTS Of 302 case-times of children with bacterial respiratory tract infections,a total of 119 strains of pathogens were cultured and isolated,the drug susceptibility rate to piperacillin/tazobactam was 91.6%,cefepime 90.8%,cefotaxime 43.7% and cefoperazone 50.4%;of 252 patients who were treated with piperacillin/tazobactam,the total effective rate was 87.3%,the incidence rates of rash and thrombocytopenia were 1.98% and 0.79%,respectively,the incidence of diarrhea was 7.1%;of 50 patients who were treated with cefotaxime and cefoperazone,the total effective rate was 62.0%,lower than that of the former;the difference between the adverse reactions was not statistically significant.CONCLUSION Piperacillin/tazobactam is effective and safe in the treatment of bacterial respiratory tract infections in the patients,which can be selected as the first-line drug for empirical treatment.
