Cephalometric analysis of Class II division 1 malocclusion before and after the treatment of functional appliance

Objective To evaluate the changes of teeth and skeletal in the correction of Class Ⅱ malclusion.Methods 28 cases of developing class Ⅱ division 1 malocclusion were selected and treate with functional appliances,e.g.Activator,Frankel.After the treatment,the molar relationship was corrected to Class Ⅰ or beginning Class Ⅲ.The changes of teeth and skeletal were analyzed by Pancherz method.Results The length of mandible increased,maxillary incisors was retruded and overjet of the incisors decreased.70% of these changes were caused by the changes of skeletal,30% caused by the changes of teeth.Molar relationship was improved.Conclusion Functional appliances stimulate the modification of the mandibular condyle and fossa,promote the development of the mandible,retrude the maxillary incisor.Among the changes,modification of skeletal plays the most important role.
